"Sheldon built our cottage in 2005 and perhaps one of the nicest surprises of the project was the ease with which Sheldon and his crew worked with us, as the owners, with no conflicts..."
“Sheldon built our cottage in 2005 on our property that we had spent a few years thinking how to best develop. We worked with an architect, Kevin Crozier, from Fergus Ontario, who in turned spent time with us, and Sheldon, to understand what we really wanted for our property and our lake house. We found Sheldon quite helpful in choosing materials and finishes that fit with the look we were trying to achieve: he was very willing to try new things, new materials, and new suppliers....while at the same time making suggestions of things he'd done before that worked well for him. Construction started on schedule and the crew Sheldon assigned was helpful, polite, and patient: their patience was especially important in our case, since we kept a very close eye on the construction and constantly checked measurements, technique, and progress. Changes were discussed openly and most times Sheldon undertook the modifications for a reasonable price with little impact to the construction schedule. We did a lot of the interior cabinetry ourselves, which was acceptable to Sheldon and his crew, in spite of the fact that it probably put more pressure on their own scheduling efforts. We did learn that we should have accepted Sheldon's recommendations on the subcontractors; in one case we insisted on a certain sub, and it turned out that the firm we chose caused the biggest single delay in the project. All in all, patience is an important virtue for both the buyer and the builder, and the project's success was ensured by a good balance from both parties. We defined certain details ourselves (like the profiles of the interior door and window trim, which were all milled on site), while we let Sheldon's carpentry crew select the best designs for the exterior decking and stairs. In all cases we were satisfied and pleased with the results. Perhaps one of the nicest surprises of the project was the ease with which Sheldon and his crew worked with us, as the owners, with no conflicts, and a very easygoing and pleasant, and fair, approach all around.”
